En entradas recientes a este blog hemos destacado la importancia de integrar las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación (TICs) en la escuela como medida para fomentar la competencia digital de los estudiantes. Esta insistencia se debe a que, en Inercia Digital, creemos en la necesidad de aprender a desarrollar nuestra alfabetización digital para poder así llegar a formar parte de esta era digital en la que estamos inmersos.

Como explicamos en una de esas entradas, son varios los motivos por los que deberíamos incorporar las nuevas tecnologías en educación: por una parte, sirven como instrumento de apoyo al profesor quien tiene a su disposición diversas herramientas para crear presentaciones como Power Point, Prezi o SlideShare. Además, constituyen una fuente infinita de recursos didácticos que se pueden usar en clase. Por otra parte, si se usan correctamente, las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación pueden facilitar el aprendizaje del alumnado e incrementar su motivación para involucrarse en ese proceso de aprendizaje, lo cual finalmente tendrá como consecuencia la obtención de mejores resultados académicos. Éstos son solos unos cuantos beneficios del uso de la nuevas tecnologías con fines didácticos.

Aunque es cierto que aún queda mucho por hacer para apoyar y facilitar la modernización de los sistemas educativos a través de la incorporación de las TICs, parece que nos movemos en la dirección correcta. En los últimos años, un número cada vez mayor de sistemas educativos pertenecientes a todos los rincones del mundo ha introducido una nueva metodología basada en el uso de internet y las TICs como herramientas de enseñanza y aprendizaje. Para poner en práctica este nuevo enfoque metodológico se requiere del uso de dispositivos electrónicos como son los ordenadores portátiles, los proyectores o las tablets; éstas últimas se han convertido en sustitutas del libro de texto tradicional. En esta entrada al blog nos gustaría hablar de una herramienta digital cada vez más común en las aulas de todo el mundo y que ha revolucionado el mundo de la enseñanza desde su aparición hace más de dieciocho años. Nos referimos a la Pizarra Digital Interactiva, también conocida como Pizarra Inteligente.

Una Pizarra Digital es simplemente una superficie interactiva en la que se pueden proyectar contenidos digitales de un ordenador a través de un proyector. Por lo tanto, su uso requiere de un ordenador y de un videoproyector. Este tipo de pizarras permiten interactuar directamente sobre la superficie de proyección, lo que significa que el usuario puede manejarla sencillamente con un puntero y en algunos casos con su propio dedo del mismo modo que usamos el ratón en un ordenador.

¿Qué nos ofrecen las Pizarras Digitales Interactivas? Cada colegio que disponga de buena conexión a internet puede tener acceso ilimitado a los recursos que estas pizarras inteligentes ofrecen. Recientemente, se han desarrollado varios estudios para conocer el grado de satisfacción y experiencia de profesores y expertos con estas pizarras digitales. Los resultados demuestran que:

  • Las pizarras digitales interactivas permiten a los profesores incorporar videos, películas, archivos de audio, diferentes webs, etc. a sus lecciones.
  • Con estas pizarras inteligentes también tenemos la posibilidad de grabar y guardar el desarrollo de una clase para su posterior reproducción.
  • Mediante el uso de estas pizarras los alumnos pueden ponerse en el papel del profesor. Es decir, pueden preparar sus propios materiales o trabajos de clase y posteriormente presentarlos de manera interactiva a sus compañeros.
  • La pizarra interactiva mejora las habilidades sociales del alumnado, dando lugar a mayores oportunidades de cooperación entre ellos y de participación.
  • Por último, y más importante, las pizarras digitales interactivas han demostrado ser un incentivo a la motivación de los alumnos, quienes se involucran en mayor medida en el proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje.

En resumen, el uso de la pizarra digital así como de otros dispositivos electrónicos parece que no solo han alterado, sino que también han mejorado la enseñanza que se produce en las escuelas de hoy.

Inercia Digital, a través de sus diferentes cursos y proyectos, juega un papel muy importante en la difusión de las competencias digitales tanto en aprendices jóvenes como adultos. In recent posts, we have highlighted the importance of integrating Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in schools as a way of enhancing students’ digital and information processing competence. This is so because, from Inercia Digital, we believe in the necessity of learning how to develop one’s digital literacy to become part of the digital era.

As explained in one of those posts, there are several reasons to use ICTs in education: one the one hand, they can support teachers’ lessons by providing them with visual aids such as Power Point, Prezi or SlideShare presentations. Additionally, they constitute an infinite array of teaching materials to be used in class. On the other hand, used wisely, ICTs can enhance students’ levels of understanding and motivation to get involved in the learning process, which will eventually lead to better results. These are just a few benefits of using technologies for educational purposes.

Although it is true that there is still much to be done to support the modernisation of educative systems through the incorporation of technologies, we seem to be moving in the right direction. In the past few years, a growing number of educative systems from all over the world have introduced a methodology based on the use of the Internet and ICTs as teaching and learning tools. In order to carry out this methodological approach, the use of devices such as laptops, projectors and tablets is often required; the latter often appear as a substitute for the traditional textbook. In this post we would like to talk about a digital tool that is becoming more and more common in our classrooms and which has certainly revolutionised the world of education since its emergence eighteen years ago. We are referring to the Interactive Whiteboard, also known as Smart Board.

An Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) is simply a surface onto which a computer screen can be displayed, via a projector. Therefore, it requires a connection to a computer as well as a data projector. It is touch-sensitive which means that, to operate it, the user can control it directly from the screen using a pen or in some cases a finger in the same way a mouse is used to control a computer.

What do IWBs offer? Each school has access to the Internet which offers unlimited ways of using these smart boards in the classroom. In the recent years, some research has been made to know teachers and experts’ experience with this device. Results show that:

  • IWBs enable teachers to incorporate video clips, films, audio files, different websites, etc. to their lesson plans;
  • they allow to record and save whole lessons for further use in the classroom;
  • they enable students to become teachers as well as students. That is, they can prepare their own materials to present interactively to their classmates;
  • they improve social skills by having greater chances for cooperation and participation.
  • And finally, and most importantly, IWBs support students’ motivation by engaging them in the instruction.

To sum up, the use of the Interactive Whiteboard as well as other technological devices seems to have changed and also improved the way classrooms look like today.
