Parents can always worry a lot about the safety of their children. Some more than others. But this has become especially true when it comes to internet use. Ever since the internet has become more and more accessible, parents are thinking about the risks that their children could be facing on-line.

But there are two types of reactions that can be detrimental to the child-parent relationship: being over-protective and being under-concerned. Both of these attitudes can come from misunderstanding the nature of internet use itself.

In a study published in 2013, the „EU Kids Online network” reveals how kids in different countries around the European Union are using the internet. According to this study, there is a strong relation between the level of the internet development in a country, and how parents should react to their kids using the internet. For instance, in countries such as Germany, Hungary or Greece kids are less likely to use the internet. In this case it could be beneficial to encourage them to use it more. In other countries, such as Sweden, Lithuania or Bulgaria, where kids are already heavy users, parents should take a more cautious approach and teach their children how to avoid the risks that are presented by the internet.

Considering that 60% of the young people between ages 9-16 are already using the internet, we would like to address a couple of the issues related to how it is being used. This way we can help parents ensure the safety of their kids online, while also letting them benefit fully from the opportunities that the internet offers.

Help your kids set up their privacy settings

One of the most important tools when using the internet is your personal account. So it is very important to know what are the privacy settings of each website that you and your children are using. Privacy settings are important because they help avoid people you do not wish to interact with. And this is especially true since the internet facilitates interactions between people that do not know each other.

Helping your children set up their privacy settings will help avoid drawing unwanted attention to their activities online.

Keep an open communication with them

It is very important to communicate with your children in general. And it is more important to do so, since the internet can present them with many awkward situations. You want to build a trustworthy relationship with your children, because you want them to come to you for advice whenever they are faced with an awkward, embarrassing or dangerous situation online. Your children have to trust that you will not judge their online interactions.

So it is useful to set some boundaries that you both agree on. This refers both to the activities that your children do online, but also to your interference in their online activity.

Inform yourself with respect to the different online threats

The internet is always evolving. This is also true when it comes to the threats that we can be confronted with online. Keep yourself up to date with respect to the most common threats, so you can help guide your kids. This means familiarizing yourself with the differences between viruses and malware, what are the best instruments to combat them, what is mail phishing, and more.
